On January 9, lawyer Neymat Karimli visited opposition politician Tofik Yagublu, who has been on a hunger strike since January 5, at the Binagadi administrative detention center. Yagublu’s health is deteriorating. “He has lost a lot of weight, is very lethargic, he has periodic dizziness,” the lawyer said.
However, the oppositionist intends to continue the hunger strike until his demands are met – meetings with relatives are provided, food products from home are allowed and the decision to arrest is cancelled.
The lawyer also pointed out the violation of the confidentiality of his communication with Yagublu. So, throughout the meeting with Yagublu, a police officer was present.
The lawyer also said that Yagublu was not isolated from other prisoners and that he was under pressure. However, Yagublu refuses, because hygiene measures are not observed in the detention center and all the prisoners have only one electric razor.
As a sign of solidarity with T. Yagublu, his wife Maya Yagublu is also on a hunger strike at home for the third day. “I continue the hunger strike, my blood pressure has increased, but I will continue the hunger strike,” said the wife.
Activists of the Popular Front Party Seymur Ahmedsoy and Elnur Guliyev also continue the hunger strike at their house for the second day, Maya Yagublu said. *Tofig Yagublu, a member of the National Council of Democratic Forces and the Musavat Party, was detained on December 23 at a protest rally in central Baku demanding the release of public activist Bakhtiyar Hajiyev.”
On the same day, the Sabail court arrested him for 30 days on charges of petty hooliganism and insubordination to the police. On January 5, the Baku Court of Appeal upheld this decision. In protest, Yagublu went on a hunger strike. Yagublu demands to ensure his rights in the detention center to meet with relatives, receive food for him and cancel the decision to arrest.
