US Senator Marco Rubio has also joined the numerous calls for the Azerbaijani authorities to release Gubad Ibadoglu.
“Gubad Ibadoglu, an Azerbaijani opposition leader and economist, faces unfounded criminal charges and is being held without access to medical care. Mr Ibadoglu’s only crime is that he spoke the truth. He should be released immediately,” Rubio wrote in X (Twitter).
*On 24 July, Baku’s Narimanov district court arrested Gubad Ibadoglu for 3 months and 26 days on charges of making counterfeit money. The Azerbaijani Interior Ministry said Ibadoglu is linked to supporters of Fethullah Gulen, accused of a 2016 coup attempt in Turkey. On 25 August, he was charged with another charge of “production, storage or distribution of religious extremist materials”.
Gubad Ibadoglu rejects the charges as absurd. Many international organisations and officials have called on official Baku to release the politician immediately. [/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row]
