On August 18, the Baku Court of Appeal partially satisfied the cassation appeal regarding the ban of Gubad Ibadoglu on telephone conversations and visits with family members. The Court of Appeal overturned the decision of the Narimanov District Court, which refused to consider Gubadoglu’s complaint, and returned the case for a new hearing, the lawyer Bahruz Bayramov told Turan.
The well-known economist and oppositionist Gubud Ibadoglu was detained on July 24 and accused of making counterfeit money by an organized group.
The Azerbaijani Interior Ministry said that Ibadoglu is associated with supporters of FETO, an organization accused of terrorism in Turkey. Gubad Ibadoglu rejected these accusations as absurd.
The opinion has been formed in society that the real reason for the arrest is criticism of the Azerbaijani authorities and the investigation of corruption in the highest echelons of power. In addition, Ibadoglu initiated the creation of a fund in the West from the money confiscated from state officials and using it for the education of Azerbaijani students.
