The activist was charged under the Article 178.3.2 of the Criminal Code (fraud committed with causing major damage). However, Abbasov pleaded not guilty. The defense will appeal.
Human rights activist Rufat Safarov considers Abbasov’s arrest a political order. Abbasov created a support group for the Azerbaijani Armed Forces during the Second Karabakh War. He was also actively involved in the protection of the rights of the arrested activist Bakhtiyar Hajiyev. According to Safarov, that’s why he was arrested.
A few days before his arrest, Rail Abbasov drafted a petition to the head of state, which was signed by a number of well-known public figures calling for the release of Bakhtiar Hajiyev.
