ALI HASANOV: “NATIONAL TV AND RADIO COUNCIL’S POITION ON FOREIGN RADIO STATIONS IS CONFORMING TO LAW”

“The National TV and Radio Council’s position on foreign radio stations conforms entirely to the law.” According to “Radio Liberty,” Presidential Administration Socio-political Department Head Ali Hasanov said this on 18 October.

“According to the current law, the TV and Radio resources of Azerbaijan can be used by the citizens only inside the country,” said Hasanov. “Granting these resources to foreign governments is against law. However, this does not mean that these TV and Radios will cease their activity in Azerbaijan. There are different ways for this. For instance, we have a reciprocal inter-government broadcasting contract with the Turkish government. There might be other steps similar to this. At present the National TV and Radio Council’s activity is intended to restore legislation in this area.”

A while ago NTRC Chairman Nushiravan Maharramli announced that the broadcasting of foreign radio stations in Azerbaijan (“Radio Liberty’, “Voice of America” and BBC) via local frequencies does not conform to law and that the broadcasting of these radios via local frequencies will be ceased as of 1 January 2009.
