On July 9, the Court of Appeal heard lawyer Gurban Mammadov’s appeal against conviction.

According to Mammadov’s defense counsel Fakhraddin Mehdiyev, the court did not grant any of their motions and upheld the decision of the Nasimi District Court.

Background: Mammadov was arrested in June 2013 over a traffic accident dating back to September 2012. He was charged under two Articles of the Criminal Code: 263.1 (violation of traffic rules causing damage to health) and 299.1 (offering payoff to victim). Mammadov said there were political motives behind his prosecution triggered by his active role in opposition and critical statements. Mammadov was sentenced to 3 years in prison by Nasimi district court on December 6, 2013.
