AZERBAIJANI HUMAN RIGHTS DEFENDERS ATTEND PACE SUMMER SESSION

Summer session of the Parliamentary Assembly of the Ocuncil of Europe was held on June 20-24, 2011. The session was also attended by Azerbaijani human rights defenders, including the Institute for Reporters’ Freedom and Safety (IRFS) Director Emin Huseynov, Human Rights Club Coordinator Rasul Jafarov and Democracy Monitor Public Union Head Fuad Hasanov.

The said rights defenders held a number of meetings, reported IRFS Director Huseynov.
The rights defenders met with Council og Europe General Secretary Thorbjorn Jagland, PACE President Movlud Chavusoglu, Germany’s Green Party representative Viola von Cramon, CoE human right commissioner Thomas Hammerberg and PACE special rapporteur on political prisoners in Azerbaijan Cristoph Strasser and PACE Monitoring Committee rapporteur for Azerbaijan Joseph Debono Grech.during the meetings, the rights defenders gave information about the violation of human rights in Azerbaijan in March-April, 2011. Besides, they informed about the youth activists Jabbar Savalanli, Bakhtiyar Hajiyev and human rights defender Vidadi Isgandarov, who were jailed for the online activities in social networking sites.
In addition, the rights defenders also informed in the meetings about the recent gross violation of property rights of citizens, the problems in TV and radio sphere, rigid licensing rules,  existence of state-run TV channel and ineffective operation of Public TV.
The aforementioned meetings, ecluding the one with Chavusoglu, were attended by journalist Eynulla Fatullayev, recently pardoned under a Presidential decree, and another group of rights defenders including Saadat Banayarli, Saida Gojamanli, Novella Jafaroglu and Chingiz Ganizade.
