AZERI MP ALLEGES THAT JAILED YOUTH ACTIVISTS ARE FOREIGN SPIES

In an interview yesterday with Bizim Yol newspaper, the Director of the Azerbaijan National Sciences Academy Human Rights Institute and Azerbaijani MP Ayten Mustafayeva, claimed that the imprisoned youth activists are the puppets of foreign powers.

“The point is that these young people are not independent. They are being controlled by foreign influences. They do not have their own political, ideological opinions. I’d like you to view the issue in this context.
Elchin Namazov, the lawyer of jailed youth activist Bakhtiyar Hajiyev, told Bizim yol that these opinions, being voiced by a ruling party MP, demonstrate that Hajiyev’s arrest is a political injunction. “Hajiyev is a youth activist and was arrested for his public activities. A fabricated charge was brought against him. Mustafayeva’s statement confirmed that the arrests of youth activists are politically motivated.”
The lawyer also noted that these arrests are inadmissible from a legal perspective. In addition, these arrests will unite the youth against the government, and the number of dissidents will increase.
Anar Gasimov, the lawyer for another jailed youth activist (Jabbar Savalanli), told IRFS that the MP implicitly confirmed that the youths had been arrested for their independent views.
Bakhtiyar Hajiyev, chraged with draft dodging, was sentenced to one month’s pre-trial detention on March 4. Jabbar Savalanli was arrested on February 5 under a drug possession charge.
