Today, youth activist Bakhtiyar Hajiyev, charged with evading military service, was tried at Nizami District Court. Judge Emin Akhundov presided over the hearing.
According to Hajiyev’s attorney Elchin Namazov, the defendant filed 2 motions: to videotape Bakhtiyar Hajiyev’s speech and change his pre-trial detention sentence. The judge rejected both motions.

Hajiyev`s brother Vugar reported to IRFS that state plaintiff Aleksey Abbasov had requested that the court charge Bakhtiyar with the evasion of military service, and sentence him to two years.
After deliberation, Judge Akhundov said that the sentence will be announced tomorrow.
The criminal case against Bakhtiyar Hajiyev was launched at the end of January, when he signed an agreement not to leave Ganja city. At the end of February his pre-trial detention was replaced with release under police bail.
On March 4, Hajiyev was sentenced to one-month’s pre-trial detention. It is widely thought that Hajiyev was arrested for his activity on social networking sites and his support of the March 11 Great People’s Day campaign.
