“BIZIM YOL” NEWSPAPER CORRESPONDENT CLAIMS TO BE THREATENED

“Bizim Yol” newspaper correspondent Natig Javadli has been allegedly threatened and insulted by owner Gudrat Karimov. The Institute for Reporters’ Freedom and Safety was told this by N.Javadli.

Several days ago Javadli published an article in “Bizim Yol” newspaper about failure of Supreme Attestation Commission to ratify owner Gudrat Karimov’s Scientific Doctorate Degree on Economy, according to the journalist. After this Karimov called the journalist and accused him in racketeering, blackmailing and working at somebody’s order. On 1 August Karimov invited Javadli to “Khazar” Shareholding Society’s Sumgayit office.
“Karimov said that the meeting would be video-recorded and I thought it was normal,” said Natig Javadli. “For about 20 minutes he called me enemy and blamed me in taking Armenians’ side. Then fulfilling my professional duty, I interviewed him and published it in the yesterday’s (4 August) edition of “Bizim Yol” newspaper. In his interview he said he would sue me. Yesterday a person called me and said that he was G.Karimov’s lawyer. That person told me that Karimov is going to sue me under articles 147 (libel) and 148 (insult) of the Criminal Code.”
IRFS called G.Karimov to learn his position on this issue. However, Karimov said he did not have time to talk about it.
