CHIEF EDITOR STRUGGLING FINANCIALLY DUE TO CORRECTIVE LABOR

The court decision to sentence "Nota Bene" Newspaper Chief Editor Sardar Alibayli to corrective labor has a negative influence on his living and social conditions. S.Alibayli reported this to the Institute for Reporters' Freedom and Safety.

Alibeyli said he has been unemployed for eight years now. "I am living on the disability pension of my son, which is 50 AZN. And one of my friends donates 50 AZN to my family every month. I sent an application to Khatai District Department of Execution of Court Decisions Office about this. But I have been paying 10 AZN out of this continuously for the last three months."
Alibayli believes people on taking revenge on him because of an article written by him where he criticizes Ilham Aliyev and Mehriban Aliyeva.
Recall that Faramez Allahverdiyev was sentenced by the Narimanov district Court to 2.5 years of imprisonment on 30 January 2007, on the basis of a lawsuit for libel and defamation put forth by Minister of Interior Ramil Usubov and Chairman of the Committee for Azerbaijanis Living Abroad Nazim Ibrahimov. At the same time, Alibeyli was sentenced 1.5 years of corrective labor. Those people doing corrective labor are obligated to give 5-20% of their earnings to the state. Appellate Court and Supreme Court upheld the lower court's decision.  In Alibeyli's case, he must give 10 percent.
