On July 17th, a group of media representatives visited the grave of late Monitor magazine editor-in-chief Elmar Huseynov to commemorate him on his birthday. The late editor, shot dead on March 2nd, 2005, would have celebrated his 44th birthday this year.
In the commemoration ceremony, Ganun magazine editor–in- chief Shahbaz Khuduoglu said that Elmar Huseynov is the icon of free press: “His murder caused mass objection. The objection, though strangled and pressed, still exists. His successor Eynulla Fatllayev is among us now. We will not stop protesting unless his murder is solved.
Then Gundelik Azerbaijan and Realnıy Azerbaydjan newspapers editor-in-chief Eynulla Fatullayev recalled Elmar’s last birthday party celebrated in the yard of a shared friend in Surakhani district. Fatullayev said that he encountered an interesting experience while he was visiting France : “I was at Reporters Without Borders of France. There was a bust erected to Anna Politkovskaya here. I asked if it is possible to deploy bust of Elmar as well. They said that they could realize my offer”
Fatulayev then said that the journalist’s son receives a good education in Norway: “Aslan Huseynov studies at one of the best schools in Norway. One day we will see a tall guy visiting his father’s grave with flowers in his hands.”
Turan Information Agency Director Mehman Aliyev said that Huseynov’s murderers are known: “His murder is a political issue. Therefore, the solution of the murder depends on poltical will.”
IRFS representative Idrak Abbasov said that the government is not interested in judging the murderers of Huseynov. “Recently, General Prosecutor’s Office and Ministry of Internal Affairs released a joint statement saying two alleged murderers of late Azer Ross president were brought to Azerbaijan from Georgia. Then why do not they do the same with Tahir Khubanov and Teymuraz Aliyev, who are alleged to be murderers of Elmar Huseynov?” he
Azadlig newspaper reporter Rovshan Hajiyev suggested to announce an article competition regarding Huseynov’s 45th birthday: “It doesn’t have to be about Elmar. We can just follow the media and award the most brave writing”
