YOUTH ACTIVIST’S HEARING AGAIN POSTPONED

Today, July 18th,  Sabail District Court postponed the scheduled preliminary hearing on the lawsuit filed by jailed youth activist Bakhtiyar Hajiyev against General Prosecutor’s Office of the Republic of Azerbaijan. Hajiyev claims that he was subjected to torturing during the investigation on his case.   The reason for postponement was the absence of Hajiyev in the hearing.

A number of journalists that had been waiting in front of the court hoping to observe the process were informed much later about the postponement.
A while later the youth activist’s brother Vugar Hajiyev said that he contacted the Shuvalan Investigative Prison #3, who told him that Bakhtiyar will not be brought to the court. “We have told that they are not entitled to bring him though they have received a relevant letter from Sabail District Court. They cited that the court sentence for Hajiyev has already taken effect and he is being transferred to prison at present. Therefore, it is needed to appeal to Penitentiary Service of the Justice Ministry to take Hajiyev to court.
BACKGROUND
Criminal case against Bakhtiyar Hajiyev was launched in the end of January, 2011. At that time, he signed a statement of commitment not to leave Ganja city. In the end of February his pre-trial detention was replaced with release under police control. Ganja City Court sentenced youth activist Bakhtiyar Hajiyev to 2 years in jail on May 18, 2011, charging him with dodging military service.
