CONTRADICTORY REPORTS ABOUT HUNGER-STRIKE OF SAKIT ZAHIDOV

Ershad Hasanov, the chief of Prison #14, told the Institute for Reporters’ Freedom and Safety this evening that imprisoned “Azadlig” Newspaper satiric/journalist Sakit Zahidov has stopped the hunger-strike he started this past Saturday.

When asked why Zahidov agreed to stop the hunger-strike, Hasanov told IRFS that the journalist’s health problems will be resolved. Hasanov refused to answer further questions, and said he was unaware of the demands that Zahidov put forth when he started the hunger-strike.
APA News Agency, citing the Public Relations Department of the Justice Ministry’s Penitentiary System, reported that Zahidov wrote a statement agreeing to stop his hunger-strike, after his appeal to be transferred to the Justice Ministry’s Treatment Facility was reviewed.
Sakit Zahidov’s wife Rena Zahidov told IRFS that reports that Zahidov stopped his hunger-strike are false.  “I contacted Prison #14 at 6:15 p.m. today, and they told me that Sakit was continuing his hunger-strike,” said Zahidova.
