DEFENSE MINISTRY APPEALS TO PRESS COUNCIL IN CONNECTION WITH “REYTING” NEWSPAPER

The Defense Ministry has appealed to the Press Council in connection with article entitled “Fight and Swearing Leaflets” that was published in 5 July edition of “Reyting” newspaper. The appeal stems from expressions like “there’s no difference between being a soldier in Azerbaijan army and being a captive in enemy’s camp” that were used by author Taleh Shahsuvarli.

“Reyting” Newspaper Editor-in-chief Afig Mirzabeyli told the Institute for Reporters’ Freedom and Safety that the reaction of the Defense Ministry is unfounded.
“This appeal of the ministry is totally unfounded, and in this article the correspondent cited investigation materials that were recently conducted in connection with soldiers in Azerbaijan Army,” said A.Mirzabeyli. “I think instead of reacting to the article, the Defense Ministry should try to solve shortcomings in the army.”
Press Council Secretary Employee Rahim Huseynzade told IRFS that they will try to talk to both sides and solve the issue. “If misunderstanding remains, the appeal will be considered during the meeting of the Complaint Commission.”
IRFS called the Defense Ministry several times, but no one answered our phone calls.
