DEMOCRACY AND NGO DEVELOPMENT RESOURCE CENTRE EMPLOYEES BEATEN IN NAKHCHIVAN

Yesterday, 15 December, in the Nakhchivan Autonomous Republic Democracy and NGO Development Resource Centre, employees were beaten by a group of Nakhchivan State University students and teachers.

Consequently, employees Ilgar Nasibov and Vefadar Eyvazov sustained serious bodily damages. This was told to IRFS in Nakhchivan, by the center’s director Melahet Nasibova. She said that employees of the centre were insulted and forced to leave the place by the leadership of the university, and about 50 students from the physical fitness faculty. This happened while Nasibov and Eyvazov were conducting surveys among students and teachers within the framework of the project “Fight against Corruption- the application of anti-corruption mechanisms in the high schools of Nakhchivan Autonomous Republic,” a project supported by the Norwegian Embassy and technical support of Euro-Asia Corporation Fund.
“They were exposed to the attack of these persons in front of the buildings where they live right after they left the place,” said M.Nasibova. “Their ribs are injured; Vefadar was injured in the face. His ribs might have broken, but they were not accepted in the hospital, and were not given medical diagnosis for their damage”.
IRFS’ correspondent in Nakhchivan Elman Abbasov came to the site of the incident. Although they used abusive language towards him, he did not face any physical pressure.
Police employees coming to the site of the incident suggested that the injured persons appeal to the police in the city. At the police station they were advised to go to the Interior Affairs Ministry. They were told that working hours were over and their appeal was not accepted. Ilgar Nasibov told IRFS today (16 December) that they would appeal to the Nakchivan city Procurator’s office and Interior Affairs Ministry concerning this problem.
Ilgar nasibov is also a reporter of Radio Liberty. He has faced attacks in Nakhchivan repeatedly and was arrested in 2007.
