FATE OF NAKHCHIVAN RESIDENT IMPRISONED FOR WRITING COMPLAINT LETTER TO PRESIDENT ABOUT POLICE UNKNOWN

Family members cannot visit Novruz Aliyev who was imprisoned for 1 year and 6 months on the special lawsuit of Nakhchivan Autonomous Republic Internal Minister Ahmad Ahmadov against him.

Although a month has passed since his arrest, his relatives cannot obtain any information about his situation. N.Aliyev’s wife Yasaman Aliyeva told this to Nakhchivan regional correspondents of the Institute for Reporters’ Freedom and Safety.
“In the Ministry of Justice I was told that I would be able to see my husband after 20 days of his arrest,” said Aliyeva. “Yesterday (5 January) I appealed to the Justice Ministry again. I was told that they had not received document from court. When they send the document we’ll grant you a visit, they said.  Then I appealed to Nakhchivan city Court judge Hijran Muradov. Muradov said he sent the documents to the Justice Ministry long ago. This is red tape. They received his clothes and medicine before the holiday. My husband has diabetes. We can’t obtain information about his health. Now they say I can see my husband after 7 January. We haven’t received the court decision yet, although more than a month has passed since the trial.”
On 3 December, during a hearing conducted in the Nakhchivan city Court, under the chairmanship of judge Hijran Muradov, Babak region Gahab village resident, 58 year old Novruz Aliyev was found guilty under article 147.2 (slander with accusing someone of grave or especially grave crime) of the Republic of Azerbaijan Criminal Code and has been imprisoned for 1.5 years.
