Former Head of International Bank Jahangir Hajiyev sentenced to 15 Years in Jail

On 14 October 2016, Baku Grave Crimes Court chaired by Judge Afgan Hajiyev held another hearing on the criminal case of the former chairman of the Board of Azerbaijan International Bank OJSC Jahangir Hajiyev and 7 other men.

At today’s hearing, the court announced the judgment. According to the judgment, Jahangir Hajiyev was sentenced to 15 years in jail and the confiscation of his 110,000-AZN-worth wristwatch, a gold plaque inscribed with the words ‘Chairman of Azerbaijan International Bank OJSC Board Jahangir Hajiyev’ and one gold coin. The judgment ordered Jahangir Hajiyev to serve his sentence in a common-regime prison, and also to pay 63 million AZN to Azerbaijan International Bank and 7 million AZN to Agro-credit CJSC.

Under the judgment, defendant Azad Javadov was sentenced to 10 years 11 months in jail. He was arrested in the courtroom. Other defendants Yusif Alakbarov and Ibrahim Huseynov received prison sentences of 7.5 years and 6 years 5 months respectively.

Defendants Anar Sultanov, Kanan Orujov and Mammad Jahangirov were each handed a 3-year suspended sentence. Defendant Ilgar Abdullayev was also given a 3-year suspended sentence and was released from the detention.

Background: Former Chairman of the Board of Azerbaijan International Bank OJSC Jahangir Hajiyev was arrested on 5 December 2015. He is charged under Articles 179.3.1 and 179.3.2 (misappropriation of a large amount of money by an organised group), 308.2 (abuse of official powers resulting in serious consequences), 309.2 (exceeding officials powers resulting in serious consequences), 313 (service forgery), and 228.1 and 228.4 (illegal acquisition, transfer, selling, storage, transportation or carrying of a weapon, its accessories, ammunition or explosives) of the Criminal Code.

The defendants are accused of misappropriating 211 million AZN.

According to the indictment, defendant Azad Javadov is additionally charged under Article 228.4 (possession of cold weapon) of the Criminal Code due to possessing the dagger that was gifted to him.
