FREEDOM OF EXPRESSION LIMITATIONS IN AZERBAIJAN DISCUSSED DURING 6TH ANNUAL FREEDOM OF EXPRESSION GATHERING

On May 23-24 the 6th Annual Freedom of Expression Gathering in Istanbul, organized by the Turkish organization Initiative for Freedom of Expression  (http://www.antenna-tr.org/index.asp?lgg=en), was held in Istanbul, Turkey.

Representatives from human rights and press freedom organizations in the Black Sea countries participated in the event, including Institute for Reporters’ Freedom and Safety Chairman Emin Huseynov. Participants provided information about the freedom of expression situation in their countries and exchanged information about work they are doing. Representatives from Amnesty International, Human Rights Watch, PEN, the International Publishers Association and Office of the OSCE Special Representative for Media Freedom also participated in the event.
E. Huseynov spoke at the event about Azerbaijan’s wrongfully imprisoned journalists, problems related to access to information, the use of force against reporters, impunity for those who violate journalists’ rights, lack of pluralism in the broadcast media and other problems related to media freedom.
