Yesterday, April 27, Ayanda Mursaliyeva visited her husband, imprisoned “Azadlig” Newspaper Editor-in-Chief Ganimat Zahid in Prison #17. The Institute for Reporters’ Freedom and Safety was told this by A. Mursaliyeva.
Ganimat does not have any complaints about prison conditions or the attitude of the staff towards him, and he continues to read in English, Mursaliyeva said.
Adding that she took daily newspapers to G.Zahid, Mursaliyeva said that the editor-in-chief is especially interested in the special rapporteur by PACE on political prisoners in Azerbaijan and believes that he will be released only as a result of assistance from PACE special rapporteur for Azerbaijan on political prisoner or through the European Court of Human Rights.
Ganimat Zahid was convicted under articles 127.2.3 (hooliganism with intentional infliction of minor bodily harm) and 221 (hooliganism) of the Criminal Code and imprisoned for four years. This charges widely understood to be spurious and Zahid is considered a political prisoner.
