Giyas Ibrahimov and His Father Convicted of Contempt

On 18 December, Yasamal District Court, chaired by Judge Huseyn Safarov, delivered its judgement against NIDA Youth Movement activist Giyas Ibrahimov, who is serving a 10-year jail sentence handed down on trumped-up drug charges after spraying a political slogan on former president Heydar Aliyev’s statue, and his father Hasan Ibrahimov.
According to Yasamal Court’s judgement, Hasan Ibrahimov will serve corrective labour for a 1.5-year period with a 20-percent deduction of his monthly salary. And Giyas Ibrahimov’s sentence was extended by 3 months.
The father and the son were convicted under Article 289.2 (contempt of court) of the Criminal Code.
Lawyer Elchin Sadigov assessed the judgement as unlawful and groundless, and said it would be appealed.
The criminal case stems from an incident that occurred in Baku Court of Appeal on 5 June of this year, when Giyas Ibrahimov unplugged the microphone inside the enclosed glass dock during the public prosecutor’s speech. This happened after the judge ignored Giyas’ remarks about not being able to hear anything.
Angered by this, the activist’s father stated his objection and demanded that the judge stop violence. “One day, same thing will happen to your children, too,” he shouted.
Judges of Baku Appeals Court, Vugar Mammadov, Aflatun Gasimov and Amir Bayramov assessed this as disrespect towards them.
