HARASZTI APPEALS TO AZERBAIJANI GOVERNMENT IN CONNECTION WITH FOREIGN RADIO STATIONS AND IMPRISONED JOURNALISTS

OSCE Special Representative on Speech and Media Freedom Miklos Haraszti sent a report to Permanent Commission of the organization on the situation of freedom of media in OSCE region.

This was reported by the Azerbaijani service of “Radio Liberty”.
In the parts of the report on Azerbaijan, M. Haraszti noted that on 5 November he appealed to Azerbaijan’s Foreign Affairs Minister Elmar Mammadyarov expressing concern about the National TV and Radio Council’s plans regarding foreign radio stations.
“I called on government representatives to reconsider their plans and to renew the licenses of foreign radio stations. These radios are crucial sources of information for Azerbaijani society,” noted Haraszti in the report.
Appealing to Foreign Affairs Minister, M. Haraszti also asked for information about “Azadlig” Newspaper correspondent Agil Khalil’s situation. He called on government representatives to release Azerbaijan’s wrongfully imprisoned journalists and to end the persecution of people who express critical ideas.
