NTRC CONDUCTS MEETING WITH FOREIGN OFFICIALS ON BROADCASTS OF FOREIGN RADIO STATIONS

Today, December 3, National TV and Radio Council Chairman Nushiravan Maharramli met with U.S.

Broadcasting Board of Governors representatives Doug Boynton and Enver Safir, Radio Free Europe/Radio Liberty (RFERL) representative Julia Ragana, U.S. Embassy in Azerbaijan Public Affairs Officer Terry Davidson, U.S. Embassy in Azerbaijan Political Affairs Officer Joanna Ganson. The Institute for Reporters’ Freedom and Safety was told this by Togrul Mammedov, NTRC Assistant to the Chairman.

According to Mammedov, “During the meeting the broadcasts of Radio Liberty and Voice of America within Azerbaijan was discussed,” said Mammedov. “Council Chairman Nushirvan Maharramli recalled that this is solely a legal matter and their politicization of the matter was improper. Chairman Maharrmali informed that guests about the (legal) articles that ban broadcasts by foreign entities with Azerbaijan national frequencies. The chairman said such broadcasts are only possible in Azerbaijan via cable networks, satellite and internet.”
