On July 26th, the IRFS correspondent to Nakhchivan Elman Abbasov and Turan news agency employee Ilgar Nasibov were summoned and questioned in Sharur Region Prosecutor’s Office with regard to their being subjected to harrassment by Sharur Police Office while preparing news report in Jalilkand village of Sharur on July 15, Abbasov reported to IRFS.
The journalists were questioned separately for 2 hours by the Sharur region’s prosecutor Kamil Shikhaliyev. The journalists were not sebjected to pressure.
BACKGROUND
On July 13th, Sharur District Executive Power Deputy Head Aladdin Mammadov, together with several persons, arrived at IRFS correspondent to Nakhchivan Hakimeldostu Mehdiyev’s house, pressured on him and cut off the power supply to the small car-washing station run by Mehdiyev. He was again assaulted on July 15 with regard to the said issue. Elman Abbasov and Ilgar Nasibov had arrived at the scene to investigate the incident. However, the police used force against them to prevent them from operating. The journalists were beaten, cameras and video cameras were seized and records deleted.
