HEARING HELD ON AZER AHMEDOV’S LAWSUIT AGAINST NSM AND CHIEF PROSECUTOR’S OFFICE

Today, 4 June, in the Sabail District Court, under the chairmanship of Judge Araz Huseynov, a hearing took place on the lawsuit of “Azadlig” Newspaper Director Azer Ahmadov against the National Security Ministry (NSM) and Chief Prosecutor’s Office’s Investigation Department Head on Grave Crimes Eldar Ahmadov to declare the eavesdropping of his phone calls unfounded.

Ahmedov’s lawyer Fariz Namazli told the Institute for Reporters’ Freedom and Safety that the hearing was held closed.
Defense lawyer Emin Gamarli from NSM and Chief Prosecutor’s Office’s representative Ali Guliyev participated in the hearing.
“During the preliminary hearing we filed a motion and asked for the court decision to listen to Azer Ahmadov’s phone conversations to be given to us,” said Namazli. “However, Chief Prosecutor’s Office’s representative Ali Guliyev did not participate in the preliminary hearing and therefore he will present the copy of it during the next hearing.”
According to E. Gamarli’s motion to hold the hearing closed for the sake of protecting professional secrets, Judge A.Huseynov decided to hold the whole hearing closed.
A. Ahmadov filed this lawsuit because his phone calls were eavesdropped when an investigation was in progress into the case of “Azadlig” Newspaper correspondent Agil Khalil. Ahmadov demands that eavesdropping on his phone calls be considered unfounded and he be paid compensation for moral damages.
