Today, 23 February, in the Baku Economic Court #1, under the chairmanship of Judge Tahira Asadova, a hearing was conducted on the lawsuit of Gundalik Baki newspaper against Press Council Chairman Aflatun Amashov.

The plaintiff, Gundalik Baki newspaper editor-in-chief Habil Valiyev, and the newspaper’s lawyer, Zaur Ibadov, took part in the hearing; and Press Council representative Shamsaddin Aliyev took part in the hearing on behalf of the defendant.
Lawyer Z.Ibadov recalled that during the last hearing he asked to present to the court the copies of the Press Council’s regulations, and instructions on the basis of which the Gundalik Baki newspaper was named “racketeering,” and said that the document has not been submitted to the court yet.
Press Council representative Shamsaddin Aliyev said that the Press Council fulfilled obligations on the basis of its Charter, and asked the court to reject the lawsuit.
Judge T.Asadova scheduled the next hearing for 10 March at 11:00 a.m.
On 30 December, 2009 the Press Council issued a decision to include Gundalik Baki newspaper on list of “racketeering press”. The newspaper leadership filed a lawsuit asking to publish a refutation regarding the decision and to pay 100.000 AZN in fines.
