Yeni Nesil Journalists Union appealed to the Azerbaijani public regarding the fifth anniversary of Monitor Journal Editor-in-chief Elmar Huseynov’s murder. The appeal points out that on 2 March, 2005, for the first time in 21st century, an Azerbaijani journalist was murdered in front of his apartment for his professional work.
“On that same day Elmar Huseynov`s colleagues vowed that they will keep his ideals alive and will remain loyal to the principals of independence and supremacy of public interests. All officials, including the President, called this case a crime against statehood, and promised that they will reveal the crime in a short period of time,” read the appeal where it was emphasized that none of the parties adhered to their promises during the last 5 years.
Yeni Nesil Journalists Union called on Azerbaijan’s public and government, governmental and nongovernmental organizations and media institutes to hold “Ten Days Dedicated to Elmar Huseynov’s Memory” and disseminate information regarding his activity from 2 March to 12 March, 2010.
They called on governmental organizations to secure journalists’ safety, to release imprisoned journalists, to re-evaluate the restrictive changes made to law, and to speed up the adoption of a law on defamation.
