Impunity, defamation bill and online freedoms are on the agenda at this year’s World Press Freedom Day in Azerbaijan

BAKU, May 01 – This year’s World Press Freedom Day conference in Azerbaijan will focus on a number of high profile issues in the area of press freedom including issues of safety of journalists, combating impunity for crimes against freedom of expression, and securing a free and open Internet as the precondition for safety online.

The media are invited to an opening plenary on May 02, 09.45 a.m. in Afurca room of the Excelsior hotel.

Among those expected to address the Opening Plenary are:

H.E. Ambassador  Koray Targay, the Head of the OSCE Office in Baku

H.E. Ambassador Richard L. Morningstar, The United States Ambassador to Azerbaijan

H.E. Ambassador Roland Kobia, the Head of the European Union Delegation to Azerbaijan

A half-day conference where more than two dozen of the top figures in civil society, academia and government will examine media freedom challenges is organized by a group of media freedom organizations including (in alphabetical order) Institute for Reporters’ Freedom and Safety (IRFS), International Media Support (IMS), IREX and Media Rights Institute (MRI). The event is supported by the OSCE Office in Baku.
