INTERNET FREEDOM AND SECURITY DISCUSSED

Azerbaijan Media Center and IREX held a roundtable on April 27th to discuss ‘Internet Freedom and Security’.

The roundtable was based on the Azerbaijan section of the Freedom House report on worldwide internet freedom. The representatives of civil society and a representative of a governmental agency attending the roundtable commented on the issue. Though civil society representatives approved the clauses included the report regarding Azerbaijan, the representative of the Ministry of Communication and Information Technologies was doubtful about the report’s value.
Media Rights Institute representative Khalid Agaliyev spoke about the development of internet use in Azerbaijan in 2008-2010, though he deemed it unremarkable compared to other countries.
The Ministry representative Zakir Gasimov deemed the facts included in the report as unfounded. According to him, the statistics reflected in the report were out of date.
Lawyer Alasgar Mammadli called the internet his freedom of expression platform. He added that the responsibility of information dissemination attributed to mass media is also applicable to the internet.
