The motions filed by jailed youth activist Jabbar Savalanli’s lawyer Anar Gasimov were rejected by Sumgayit City Police Office investigator Ziyadkhan Aliyev.
Gasimov had filed a motion requesting the interrogation of Drug Abuse Clinic experts in Savalanli’s trial with regard to previous drug abuse examination, and also for a reassigned and an alternative drug abuse examination.
Lawyer Anar Gasimov told Media forum that they will be appealing against the rejection.
BACKGROUND
Azerbaijan Popular Front Party youth member Jabbar Savalanli was arrested on February 5, 2011. He is being charged with drug possession, but it is widely thought that his arrest was politically motivated, linked to criticism of the government posted on social networking sites.
The medical examination conducted by the Health Ministry’s Drug Abuse Clinic revealed that Savalanli was not a drug addict, and did not require treatment. However, the document did not rule out that the youth activist could have used drugs.
