JOURNALIST APPEALS TO EUROPEAN COURT OF HUMAN RIGHTS

Ramid Ibrahimov, an employee of Bizim Yol newspaper, has taken his appeal to the European Court of Human Rights.

According to his lawyer Zibeyda Zakariyyayeva, of the Media Rights Institute, the appeal submitted to the European Court of Human Rights demands restoration of the right to a fair trial, the right to freedom of expression and the right to a private life.

Background

On 26 November 26 2010, Bizim Yol (“Our Way”) newspaper employee Ramid Ibrahimov was preparing a report entitled “Winter Park”, when he was physically assaulted by an official from the Baku City Executive Office (BCEO). The journalist reported the incident to Nasimi District Police Department #21. However a senior investigator, Police Captain Yashar Isayev, refused to launch a criminal investigation. Ibrahimov took his grievance to Nasimi District Court, and subsequently to the Appeals Court, but the appeal was unsuccessful.
