Jailed journalist Javid Shiraliyev and former prosecutor Rufat Safarov have started hunger strike, Safarov’s mother Tahira Tahirgizi reported.
“Political prisoners – journalist and human rights defender Javid Shiraliyev and lawyer Rufat Safarov – have begun an indefinite hunger strike in protest at illegalities taking place in Prison #9, including inhuman treatment of inmates, tortures, unjustified solitary punishments, division of prisoners into privileged and unprivileged classes, transformation of the prison into a kind of corrupted closed joint-stock company, and, in general, the rebirth of last century’s gulags in the current justice system,” she said.
