“KHALG GAZETI” CHANGES HEADLINE OF MATERIAL BELONGING TO “RESPUBLIKACHI” PROPAGANDA GROUP

“Respublikachi” Initiative Group appealed to Central Election Commission because on 20 February “Khalg Gazeti,” a publicly funded newspaper, altered the group’s propaganda material about the referendum.

“Khalg Gazeti” changed the subtitle for the material before publishing it in the newspaper.
CEC employee Azer Sariyev told the Institute for Reporters’ Freedom and Safety, “The newspaper is required to make a statement regarding the appeal. This decision was stated during a meeting of the commission on 24 February. The newspaper published a statement in its 25 February edition.”
Although it is alleged that the newspaper published a refutation on 25 February, only information about the meeting of CEC was published on that date.
“Due to technical problems, the headline was published wrong and a refutation was published in the newspaper after CEC’s decision,” a person who would not introduce himself, told the Institute for Reporters’ Freedom and Safety via telephone.
Lawyer Alasgar Mammadli told IRFS that according to law on placing propaganda materials, the material published incorrectly should be republished correctly free of charge.
The subtitle “18 March Referendum should be cancelled because it is wrong” was changed to “”Respublikachi’ propaganda group about legal aspects of referendum.”
