Lawmakers in Azerbaijan Propose Legal Regulation of Online Media

The issue of legal regulation of online media has yet again been brought up in Azerbaijan. Such a proposal was put forward by Press Council Chairman MP Aflatun Amashov during the first meeting of the spring session of Milli Meclis (Parliament) held on 1 February. During the discussion of the legislative work plan of the spring session, Amashov took the floor and stressed the importance of determining the status of online media.

“Anybody can buy a domain and host and write whatever they want on the internet. Taking any step at judicial level in this regard is difficult. They should not go beyond the scope of freedom of expression. Therefore, the legal status of online media needs to be determined,” Aflatun Amashov said.

Aflatun Amashov also suggested allocation of state funding to online media.
