Local governor seeks 100,000 AZN damages from an online newspaper

On April 12 head of Imishli District Executive Power, Vilyam Hajiyev, filed a lawsuit with Sabail District Court against http://veteninfo.az/ online newspaper over the article “Businessman arrested because of Vilyam Hajiyev” published on veteninfo.az on April 11, founder and editor of the online newspaper Nahid Janbakhishli reported to the Institute for Reporters’ Freedom and Safety (IRFS) on May 13.

“In his lawsuit, Hajiyev stated that the article damages his business reputation as it may create mistrust from different groups including local community, the staff of Executive Power and leadership of the Presidential Administration. He demands 100,000 AZN damages for humiliation of his honor and dignity and retraction of the false information damaging his business reputation. Hajiyev noted that if he wins the case, he money would be donated to one of Baku kindergartens”, said Janbakhishli.

The editor added that he has got evidence proving the published information which he would present to the court.

The lawsuit against veteninfo.az will be heard on May 29.
