MAYOR’S OFFICE GIVES “ABSURD” RESPONSE TO REQUEST TO CONDUCT PRESS FREEDOM RALLY

The Baku City Executive Administration responded to a letter seeking permission for the conduction of a rally in support of press freedom.

The rally committee’s chairman Eldar Namazov told the Institute for Reporters’ Freedom and Safety that the response letter (which was sent to determine in which locations people are allowed to conduct rallies) came yesterday, January 29. In the letter it is written that no changes have been made to the list of locations for such events that was drawn up in 2006.  According to the letter, in letters requesting permission one location must be stated for the conduction of the proposed rally. Then the executive administration considers the request, and determines at which location the event should be held, according to the rally’s goals. Namazov called the letter “absurd” and “contradictory.” He said that in the near future members of the rally committee will meet and hold talks to discuss what their next step will be. Namazov did not rule out that this matter will be resolved in court.
