MINISTER SPEAKS ABOUT UPCOMING WORK IN TELECOMMUNICATION AREA

APA reports Communications and Information Technology Minister Ali Abbasov noted that at the end of 2009 or in the beginning of 2010 Azerbaijan national satellite could be put into orbit.

The Minister emphasized that in 2009 International Telecommunication Union is expected to give Azerbaijan the license related to this matter. He also added that, “The project of the national satellite can be prepared by the time our government receives a license. An Azerbaijani representative with expertise in this area will work for six months in the International Telecommunication Union (ITU) related to the acceleration of putting the satellite into orbit and other issues. Communications and Information Technology Ministry Information Community Development Department Chief Consultant Ilaha Rzayeva will represent Azerbaijan provisionally in the organization.”  

Abbasov also told “Trend” that there could be another “Contract of century” on the horizon, this time in Azerbaijan’s Telecommunications sector. The minister said, “We have taken initiative in a project to set up a high-speed network from Eastern Europe to Southeastern Asia to fill information gaps.” According to the minister, some countries have already expressed their interest in this project. The minister, who plans to meet with the representatives of those countries, also emphasized that it is possible to form a consortium for the realization of this project.
