MUSHFIG HUSEYNOV HAS SERIOUS HEALTH PROBLEMS

Imprisoned “Bizim Yol” newspaper correspondent Mushfig Huseynov’s health has deteriorated. The Institute for Reporters’ Freedom and Safety (IRFS) was told this by Mushfig Huseynov’s close relative Cavidan Huseynov who visited the journalist in Prison #2 on Saturday, 30 May.

During the meeting M. Huseynov complained about his health, according to J. Huseynov. “The journalist suffers from chest pain and intestinal pain,” said J. Huseynov. “He did not complain about prison conditions. However, he is very concerned about his health.”
On 27 May, during a hearing in the Azizbayov District Court, a decision was adopted to reject M.Huseynov’s appeal asking to free him from the rest of his sentence due to his health problems.
Mushfig Huseynov was convicted under Article 311.1 (receiving of a bribe) of the Criminal Code and on 21 January 2008 was sentenced by Grave Crimes Court Judge Jamal Ramazanov to 6 years of imprisonment, followed by 2 year ban on his writing activity.  However, this sentence was reduced to 5 years through a decision adopted by Appellate Court Judge Sahibkhan Mirzayev on 4 April 2008.
