Baku Appeal Court has rejected the appeal against Nasimi District Court’s decision of 12 August 2016 on the pre-trial detention of Republican Alternative (ReAl) Movement Executive Secretary Natig Jafarli, Jafarli’s lawyer Javad Javadov has said.
Natig Jafarli was arrested on 12 August 2016. He was charged under Articles 192.1 (illegal business) and 308.2 (abuse of official powers – when such actions lead to serious consequences) of the Criminal Code, and Nasimi District Court sentenced him to four-months of pre-trial detention.

According to the lawyer, they intend to appeal to the European Court of Human Rights against this decision.

Javad Javadov quoted Natig Jafarli as stating during the hearing that the statements published by the Prosecutor General’s Office on 15th August did not belong to him. The statement publicised by the Prosecutor’s Office read that “Natig Jafarov confirmed the above-mentioned facts in his statements provided within the case, and confirmed that he had not registered the grant agreements with the relevant executive authority, that he had received the allocated grant funds with the help of his friend and the-then co-chairman of REAL Movement Ilgar Mammadov with the aim of making a profit, and that as a natural person disposed of those funds for the projects headed by himself.”

Javad Javadov said Natig Jafarli had not been subjected to any pressure and was in good spirits.
