Cassation Appeal of Member of Opposition Party Rejected

The Supreme Court heard and dismissed the cassation appeal filed by Mammad Ibrahim, advisor to the chairman of the opposition party Azerbaijan Popular Front Party (APFP. 

Background: Mammad Ibrahim was arrested on 30 September 2015, based on the complaint of Mikayil Guliyev, who had recently left the APFP. He was accused of striking Mikayil Guliyev. Mammad Ibrahim was charged with hooliganism. Later, two more people, Oruj Valiyev and Mahammad Gurbanov also brought a complaint, claiming that they had toobeen struck by Mammad Ibrahim during the incident. After that the initial charge was changed to a more serious charge under Article 221.2.2 (hooliganism and resisting the authorities) of Criminal Code. Mammad Ibrahim was sentenced to 3 years in prison by Narimanov District Court’s verdict of 15 March 2016. On 13 May 2016, Baku Appeal Court rejected Ibrahim’s appeal against the verdict.
