The organizing committee of the Eurovision 2011 Song Contest has called upon the Azerbaijani authorities to put an end to the gross violations of citizens’ property rights, and to ensure the political (and other) freedoms of the people, reports Turan news agency, reports, quoting the Eurovision 2011 website.
According to the information posted on the website on August 31st, the European Broadcasting Union calls on Azerbaijan to provide written guarantees that foreign visitors will be provided with the necessary visas and that the freedoms of speech, expression and press of the participants, delegations, media representatives and tourists will be upheld.
“These fundamental rights has underpinned the success of the Eurovision Song Contest since 1956, and 2012 will not be an exception,” said Frank-Dieter Freiling, the Chairman of the Reference Group for the the Eurovision Song Contest
It is still unknown where exactly Eurovision will be held. Currently, Baku’s biggest stadium holds 14,000; a new hall will be very likely built specifically for the contest.
Markus Loning, Human Rights Commissioner of the German Government, has recently condemned the Azerbaijani government for violations of citizens’ rights.
