OSCE WILL CONTINUE INSISITENCE OF RELEASING OF IMPRISONED JOURNALISTS IN AZERBAIJAN

Yesterday, 30 July, OSCE representative on media freedom Dunja Mijatovich submitted her regular report to the Permanent Council.

The report stated that on OSCE's official website Mijatovich wrote a letter to the Minister of Azerbaijan Republic Elmar Mammadyarov on 25 March and wanted President Ilham Aliyev to pardon Azadlig newspaper Editor-in-chief Ganimat Zahid.

“Ganimat Zahid has completed half of his prison term. My two appeals were related to one journalist and two bloggers who are being held in prison,” said Mijatovich. She emphasized that she called on the Azerbaijan government to carry out the decision adopted by the European Court of Human Rights on 22 April.  She asked for Ilham Aliyev to release Eynulla Fatullayev and the two bloggers.

"On 26 June, Fatullayev was sentenced to 2,5 years in prison for unexplained charges. I criticized the decision of the court, in that Azerbaijan isn't intending on implementing the obligations before OSCE in the sector of media freedom,” said Mijatovich.  She added that OSCE will continue to follow Eynulla Fatullayev`s case and to continue to ask for the release of the two youth bloggers.
