PARLIAMENT CHAIRMAN AGAINST RELEASE OF JOURNALIST

Deputy Jamil Hasanli asked Parliament Chairman Ogtay Asadov to support the release of imprisoned journalists and bloggers during the meeting held today, 25 December.

“The arrest of journalists and bloggers became an international problem, and damages Azerbaijan’s image seriously,” said Hasanli. “I ask you to use your influence and appeal to the president to release Ganimat Zahid, Eynulla Fatullayev, Mushfig Huseynov, Adnan Hajizade and Emin Milli”.
According to Mediaforum website, Ogtay Asadov said in response, “I can appeal for everyone except one person. This person is Eynulla Fatullayev.”
Parliament Deputy Chairman Valeh Alasgarov spoke about the resolution of the European Parliament that was issued several days ago.
“They make calls to release some people or restore some broadcasts,” said Alasgarov. “If these calls were relevant to the rights of Azerbaijani people we would approach to them differently. Therefore we should retaliate to these calls. Let the European Parliament remember the refugees and IDPs once and adopt a resolution regarding their rights.”
In its resolution the European Parliament expressed concern regarding the deterioration the situation of the media and demanded that all imprisoned journalists be released. The Parliament emphasized that it is necessary to adopt the law “On Defamation” and to restore foreign radio broadcasts via local FM frequencies.
