During today’s session of the Milli Mejlis, national deputies expressed position on U.S. President Barack Obama’s official statement on the occasions of World Press Freedom Day. Parliamentarians Asef Hajiyev, Ganira Pashayeva, Siyavush Novruzov, Mubariz Gurbanli and others objected to mentioning of Azerbaijan parallel to Zimbabwe, and called on the Ministry of Interior to ask the U.S. embassy for an explanation.
Emphasizing that there are still several journalists in prison, Musavat deputy group member Panah Huseyn said that Azerbaijan’s political administration will receive such an opinion as long as the journalists are thrown into prison.
According to ANS, Milli Mejlis speaker Ogtay Asadov stated that we should look for the guilt in ourselves regarding this issue.
On 1 May, U.S. President Barack Obama released a statement in connection with World Press Freedom where he mentioned Azerbaijan’s name saying, “In every corner of the globe, there are journalists in jail or being actively harassed: from Azerbaijan to Zimbabwe, Burma to Uzbekistan, Cuba to Eritrea.”
