PEN CLUB APPEALS TO ILHAM ALIYEV

PEN Club England President Lisa Appignanesi has sent an appeal to the President of Azerbaijan Republic Ilham Aliyev asking to release imprisoned Editor-in-Chief "Gundelik Azerbaijan" and "Realny Azerbayjan" Newspapers Eynulla Fatullayev. The Institute for Reporters’ Freedom and Safety was told this by E. Fatullayev’s father Emin Fatullayev who talked to the editor-in-chief on the phone.

According to Emin Fatullayev, Lisa Appignanesi’s letter was sent to the Supreme Court by the Presidential Administration for a response. The response, written by the Chairman of the Supreme Court Ramiz Rzayev, was sent to Eynulla Fatullayev at Prison #12.
Emin Fatullayev told IRFS that R. Rzayev stated in the response letter that Eynulla Fatullayev has the right to file a cassation complaint.
Noting that his case will be considered in the European Court of Human Rights, Eynulla Fatullayev did not file a cassation complaint. Eynulla Fatullayev congratulated “Bizim Yol” Newspaper correspondent Natig Javadli for winning the “Free Press of Eastern Europe” Prize.
Editor-in-Chief "Gundelik Azerbaijan" and "Realny Azerbayjan" Newspapers Eynulla Fatullayev was sentenced to 2.5 years of imprisonment on 21 April 2007 for insulting honor and dignity.  Later he was convicted under articles 214.1 (threatening terror), 283.2.2 (incitement of ethnic/national, social or religious hatred abusing authority), and 213.2.2 (tax evasion) of the Criminal Code and was sentenced to 8.5 years of imprisonment on 30 October 2007.
