PRESS CONFERENCE HELD REGARDING ARREST OF EDITORS-IN-CHIEF

Today, 12 October, in the press center of the Institute for Reporters’ Freedom and Safety, a press conference was held regarding the arrest of Nota” Newspaper Editor-in-chief Substitute Sardar Alibeyli, and “Milletim” Newspaper Editor-in-chief Faramaz Allahverdiyev.

Ramiz Tagiyev opened the event and said that the editor-in-chiefs were not arrested because of “Azadlig Harakatchilari” Union Head Tahmasib Novruzov’s lawsuit, but on the basis of National Security Ministry’s order. R.Tagıyev suggested that the publication of “Nota” and “Milletim” newspapers should not be ceased, the families of the imprisoned editor-in-chiefs should receive assistance, and a Working Group should be created to keep attention focused on this issue.
“Khural” Newspaper Editor-in-chief Avaz Zeynalli assessed the creation of the Working Group positively, and said that the Working Group should hold a meeting with all newspapers’ editor-in-chiefs.
A.Zeynalli added that Azerbaijan’s media displayed indifference regarding the arrest of editors-in-chief. Only a few newspapers published information about the arrest of S.Alibayli and F.Novruzoglu.
“Milli Yol” Newspaper Editor-in-chief S.Agabeyli expressed his regret that media showed indifference regarding this issue. He said this all confirms that the attacks against free speech have strengthened.
Sardar Alibeyli and Faramaz Novruzoglu were sentenced to 3 months imprisonment, and Ramiz Tagiyev was sentenced to 6 months of corrective labor according to the special lawsuit of T.Novruzovon from 8 October 2009.
On 9 October, a decision was issued on the appeal of both parties against the decision of the Nizami District Court adopted on the special lawsuit of Internal Army Commander, General Lieutenant Zakir Hasanov; Internal Army Deputy Commander Fakhraddin Samadov; Internal Army Staff Department Head, Colonel Nasir Huseynov; and Internal Army Financial Manager Namig Poladov against “Nota” Newspaper Editor-in-chief Substitute Sardar Alibeyli.
