On December 21, lawyer Elchin Sadigov met with journalist Ikram Rahimov, who has been sentenced to 1 year in jail on charges of libel, the lawyer reported via his Facebook page.

Sadigov noted that the journalist had been subjected to torture. “Journalist Ikram Rahimov has been subjected to torture at Sumgayit City Police Department. They wanted to force him to apologise to Sumgayit City Executive Power head Zakir Farajov via live camera. Despite our repeated complaints to the Prosecutor General’s Office, the journalist has not been interviewed in this connection and has not been examined by an expert,” the lawyer said.

The lawyer said their appeals regarding the journalist’s subjection to torture were not investigated. “Ikram himself says the prosecutor’s office is waiting for the injuries to his temple and ribs to heal completely. All legal steps necessary for the investigation and legal assessment of the torture episode will be taken. If we are unsuccessful at the domestic level, we will complain to the European Court of Human Rights,” Sadigov noted.
