PROVOCATION BEING PREPARED AGAINST SAKIT ZAHIDOV

Provocation is being prepared against imprisoned “Azadlig” newspaper journalist/satiric Sakit Zahidov.

Zahidov’s wife Rena Zahidova, who visite her husband in prison #14 yesterday (4 June), told this to the Institute for Reporters’ Freedom and Safety.

“It looks like the prison administration has a plan against Sakit. He wrote a letter about this provocation, but they took it from him. He didn’t write it secretly, and gave one copy to the chief of the prison,” she said, emphasizing that her meeting with the journalist was only possible under heavy supervision of the police.

“Sakit didn’t concretely say what the provocation was about. Neither did he mention any names. But he complained about the chief of the prison. The chief has ordered every prisoner not to talk to Sakit. None of the prisoners talk to him for fear of being punished by the chief. If they do, they get punished by the chief. There are several prisoners who were put in a penalty cell for speaking to Sakit. He thinks that of this is a result of a political order from the government. If something happens to him, then the order will be fulfilled,” said Zahidova. Zahidova added that only one year is left in her husband’s sentence. They probably want to prolong his arrest term by using provocation.
