Today, well-known public and politcal figures of Azerbaijan expressed support to human rights defender Intigam Aliyev, who was subjected to police violence on December 6-7 in Istanbul airport.
The civil society representatives that came together in the office of the Institute for Reporters’ Freedom and Safety expressed their outrage against the actions of the Turkish police that used violence against the human rights defender.
Aliyev was in attendace in the event as well. He noted that he was beaten after the international community demanded his release. Two undercover agents beat him in front of others. Prior to that, he was handcuffed and taken as a criminal.
“I was shocked, because I had identified myself. I am surprised about the reaction of the Turkish embassy to the incident. I believe that governments of both countries should investigate the incident,” said Aliyev.
APFP leader Ali Karimli said that it is a criminal action and the ruling establishments of both countries should reace adequately to this, and the incident should be investigated to the very end.
The other speakers emphasized the need for legal assessment of the incident and objective coverage of the incident on the media.
A large group of public figures has sent an open letter to Turkish Ambassador to Azerbaijan Hulusi Kilic requesting to launch an investigation into the incident.
Seymur Hamzayev, an employees of BP company, said that he faced similar developments in Istanbul a day before. “The police, whom I requested to behave kindly, used violence against me. I am also going to turn to Turkish embassy for this,” Hamzayev said.
Azerbaijan Barristers Association President Annagi Hajibayli sais that the public defence of Intigam Aliyev is not a step against the Turkish state, simply it is the protection of citizens, as well as Turkish citizens, from the illegal actions of office holders.
To note, the incident that occured to Azerbaijani lawyer led to outrage of Turkish mass media and civil society as well and has been widely discussed in social networking sites.
