RIGHTS DEFENDER’S POSTAL SERVICE LAWSUIT REJECTED

Today, Yasamal District Court heard the lawsuit filed by rights defender Rasul Jafarov against Azerekspresspocht Communications Office.

Jafarov, the 2010 Fellow of the International Bridge of Justice group, was unable to travel to Singapore for an International Bridge of Justice conference because the postal service lost his visa documents. Because Singapore does not have an embassy in Azerbaijan, Jafarov was required to submit his documents to the Singaporean embassy in Geneva, but the Azerpochtexpress Communications Office lost his documents.
Turkish Airlines became involved in the lawsuit after a motion put forward by Jafarov, based on Azerpocht’s claim that the documents had been lost by Turkish Airlines.
The Judge Fuad Talishinski decided to not fulfill the lawsuit and did not approve the idea that the Office had lost the documents. Turkish Airlines filed a mutual lawsuit against Jafarov was fulfilled. Jafarov has to pay 100 AZN to the company to cover lawyer costs. Turkish Airlines became involved in the lawsuit after a motion put forward by Jafarov, based on Azerexpresspocht’s claim that the documents had been lost by Turkish Airlines.
Jafarov told IRFS that he would be filing an appeal against the decision. “The decision is unfounded. Apart from the compensation for moral and financial damage, we must approve the fact that the Communications Office has lost my documents. Even the opposite side has admitted in its letters to us that they had lost the documents. But the court made such an absurd decision,” Jafarov said.
